Prior to TWR's involvement in the BTCC program, Volvo commissioned Swedish engineering specialists Steffansson Automotive to design and build a prototype based on the 850 estate to gauge the feasibly of such a project. The finished car was only ever used for initial testing and never raced.

As of 2008 the car is for sale and currently fitted with a 5-cylinder turbo engine.
